The Best Source of Rhodiola Rosea

From our last article, we now understand how Rhodiola Rosea works its magic in our body. We will now look at the best way to get Rhodiola Rosea, short of traveling to Siberia!

Do I need to travel to Siberia to get Rhodiola Rosea?

Luckily, no. Dr. Ramazanov (the father of Rhodiola Rosea) pioneered a method of extracting the active components of Rhodiola Rosea roots. This powder extract can then be put into capsules or tablets.

So, while you do not need to go to Siberia you do want a supplier of Rhodiola who HAS gone to Siberia and harvested the Rhodiola direct from the Siberian mountains.

Is all Rhodiola the same?

No, no and no! First, it is important to remember that there are over 200 species of the Rhodiola plant and only the specific Rhodiola Rosea species has been shown to have significant health benefits. We recommend you steer clear of any product that just says "Rhodiola". If it does not say "Rhodiola Rosea", it is mostly like a different species of Rhodiola.

Okay, is all Rhodiola Rosea the same?

No, no and no! With the popularity of Rhodiola Rosea there are many companies trying to grow Rhodiola Rosea plants in various environments and using various drying techniques. The phytochemical makeup of Rhodiola Rosea has a lot to do with growing in the harsh, frigid, high altitude environment of the Siberian mountains. Lab analysis shows that Rhodiola Rosea that is not from Siberia has a different chemical profile.

How can you tell which Rhodiola Rosea has the right chemical properties?

To be able to spot a good Rhodiola Rosea extract you first need to know a little about the phytochemistry (or chemical make up) of Rhodiola Rosea.

Rhodiola Rosea root is made up of six distinct chemical groups:

    • Phenylpropanoids
    • Phenylethanol derivatives
    • Flavanoids
    • Monoterpernes
    • Triterpenes
    • Phenolic acids

Don’t worry, you really don’t need to know what all this means – it just basically describes the components that make up Rhodiola Rosea. The two components we are most interested in are the Phenylpropanoids and Phenylethanol derivatives.

There are three Phenylpropanoids in Rhodiola Rosea – rosavin, rosin and rosarin – together these three components are called ROSAVINS.

The second area of interest is the Phenylethanol derivatives. One of the Phenylethanol derivatives is called SALIDROSIDE.

In research on native Rhodiola Rosea from Siberia the root has been found to have approximately 3 percent ROSAVINS (this is the rosavin, rosin and rosarin all added together) and about 1% SALIDROSIDE. This 3:1 ratio of ROSAVINS to SALIDROSIDE is the key to identifying pure Rhodiola Rosea.

So, if I see a 3:1 ratio of Rosavins to Salidroside I know I have a good Rhodiola Rosea product?

You are off to a good start. You want to make sure you see that 3:1 ratio, but you also want to see that the Rhodiola Rosea is from Siberia. You are looking for Siberian Rhodiola Rosea with approximately 3% Rosavins and 1% Salidroside.

Anything else that would indicate a quality Rhodiola Rosea supplement?

Yes. Two words… Freeze Dried! Once you have quality Rhodiola Rosea from Siberia the next issue is how you will dry the root and make a powder. The Freeze Dried process works by subjecting the Rhodiola Rosea to very low temperatures so any moisture is frozen and then vaporized. Freeze Drying does not introduce high heat that could harm the nutritional value of the Rhodiola Rosea. Simply put, Freeze Dried Rhodiola Rosea will maintain the highest level of nutrients from the Rhodiola Rosea root.

Are there other ways to dry Rhodiola Rosea?

Unfortunately yes. The vast majority of Rhodiola Rosea on the market is spray dried. In spray drying an agent is sprayed onto the Rhodiola Rosea and this agent (often Malodextrin) absorbs out the moisture and drys the root. The problem is, the agent stays on the Rhodiola Rosea root. The powder that is left over when you spray dry Rhodiola Rosea is a mixture of Rhodiola Rosea and the agent you used for drying (Malodextrin). I don’t know about you, but we like our Rhodiola Rosea pure.

Why do companies choose to spray dry? It is much cheaper to spray dry rather than freeze dry! If a company is spending the extra money to freeze dry Rhodiola they will say so on their label. Our advice, look for Freeze Dried Rhodiola.

My head is starting to spin, can you recommend a source for Rhodiola Rosea?

Of course. After months of researching sources for Rhodiola Rosea we were able to find…

    • Rhodiola Rosea that is wildcrafted exclusively from the Siberian Mountains
    • Rhodiola Rosea that is lab tested and conforms to the 3:1 ratio of Rosavins to Salidroside
    • Rhodiola Rosea that is 100% Freeze Dried
    • Rhodiola Rosea that is direct from Dr. Ramazanov’s company

We went right back to the source – Dr. Ramazonov and his colleagues. There is no one who knows more about Rhodiola Rosea, the best ways to harvest it and the best ways to process it than Dr. Ramazonov and his colleagues.

Is All Cordyceps Sinensis The Same?

November 24, 2008

Is All Cordyceps Sinensis The Same?

If you have been reading our articles, it is clear that we feel Cordyceps Sinensis is a wonderful herb. You might be saying – what is the catch? The catch with Cordyceps has been price and purity…

Cordyceps Sinensis sounds great – does it matter where my Cordyceps comes from?

Yes! If you remember from our article, Cordyceps – The Big Picture, wild Cordyceps Sinensis is extremely rare and very expensive. While Wild Cordyceps has all the nutritional benefits that we love, it may also have impurities and is not always processed in a safe manner.

On the other hand, cultivated Cordyceps Sinensis, traditionally was very safe – but it did not have the same nutritional profile of wild Cordyceps. It is believed that growing Cordyceps in a low altitude environment produced Cordyceps that was up to 50 times LESS effective than high altitude, wild Cordyceps.

So, for years consumer were stuck with two bad choices – buy expensive and possibly impure wild Cordyceps or buy cultivated, safe and ineffective Cordyceps???

Enter Aloha Medicinals to Completely Transform Cultivated Cordyceps

Dr. John Holliday and his company – Aloha Medicinals have spent years researching the best way to grow Cordyceps Sinensis in a safe, cultivated environment – while maintaining all the health benefits that wild Cordyceps Sinensis affords. Dr. Holliday experimented with different temperatures, different oxygen levels, varied growing conditions and different substrates – all while performing DNA testing to make sure the Cordyceps Sinensis he cultivated would meet the potency of wild Cordyceps.

Did Aloha Medicinals succeed in making a cultivated Cordyceps that was as powerful as wild Cordyceps?

No! Aloha Medicinals made a Cultivated Cordyceps that was 5 Times MORE potent than Wild Cordyceps!

Aloha Medicinals hard work paid off with a Cultivated Cordyceps Sinensis that is…

    • Guaranteed to be the most potent Cordyceps in the world – 5 times more potent than Wild Cordyceps
    • The only Cordyceps Sinensis that is grown in low oxygen, low temperature conditions – just like nature!
    • Guaranteed 100% DNA Certified through Independent testing to be authentic Cordyceps Sinensis
    • Guaranteed 100% USDA Certified Organic
    • Guaranteed 100% Vegetarian – Absolutely no insect residue
    • Guaranteed to be derived directly from Tibetan Strains
    • Guaranteed to be 100% American Grown in FDA registered biotech facility

How can you prove Aloha Medicinals Cordyceps is more potent than Wild Cordyceps?

Excellent question. One of the most accurate tests to identify a specific herb or botanical is High Performance Liquid Chromatography with Mass Spectrometry (HPLC/MS). Don’t worry, the name makes it sound more confusing than it really is. Basically, with HPLC you measure the active ingredients (or analogs) that makeup your sample.

With Cordyceps Sinensis the analogs are HEAA (Hydroxyethyl Adenosine Analogs). An HPLC test is a very accurate way to measure the HEAA in different Cordyceps samples. The higher the HEAA – the stronger the Cordyceps. Here is the HPLC test for Aloha Medicinals Cordyceps Sinensis versus Wild Cordyceps Sinensis…

As you can clearly see, the Blue Line (Aloha Medicinals Cordyceps) peaks higher than the Red Line (Wild Cordyceps) for every single component.

In effect, Aloha Medicinals has taken the incredible Wild Cordyceps mushroom and made it 5 times stronger!

Sounds great – where can I get Aloha Medicinals Cordyceps?

We thought you would never ask! Our newest product – Perfect Acai Revive provides a daily dose of a full 1,620mg of Aloha Medicinals Organic Cordyceps Sinensis. We made the decision to exclusively use Aloha Medicinals Cordyceps because it is the purest and most potent Cordyceps in the world.

You can read all about the Perfect Acai Revive here.

Conclusion:

Cordyceps Sinensis is an incredible medicinal mushroom that can increase energy, endurance, stamina, libido and oxygen capacity. Athletes have long known the benefits of Cordyceps and now more and more "average" people are discovering the health benefits of Cordyceps. High price and purity issues have kept wild cordyceps from becoming a widely accepted supplement in the West. Now, Aloha Medicinals makes cultivated and extremely potent Cordyceps available to everyone.

Cordyceps Sinensis The Miracle Mushroom?

November 24, 2008

Cordyceps Sinensis
The Miracle Mushroom?

Cordyceps Sinensis does not exactly roll off your tongue, but this fungus with a funny name has a very impressive resume…

    • A history of use in China and the Orient of over 1,500 years
    • Prized by members of the Emperor’s court and other Chinese Nobility for its healing powers
    • Due to it’s rarity and power, one of the most expensive medicinal foods in the world
    • Subject of over 300 clinical studies
    • Credited for helping the Chinese Olympic team shatter track and field records
    • Named one of the best energy booster by Alternative Medicine Magazine (10/2004)

How can one little mushroom (which is technically not even a mushroom – more on that later) have such powerful effects? Cordyceps Sinensis (or dong chong xia cao as it is called in China) has been a staple of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 1500 years. Today, the Western World has come to appreciated the amazing health properties of Cordyceps. How did it all get started? To answer this question we need to go back about 1500 years ago and see why a herd of Yaks was acting so feisty…

Rhodiola Rosea

November 24, 2008

Rhodiola Rosea
A Russian herb that can improve all aspects of your life?

Yes, this sounds too good to be true but we can not think of another plant that could make the following claims…

    • Rhodiola has been the subject of over 180 studies over a 40 year period.
    • Classified as an adaptogen herb – balances all aspects of the body without side effects.
    • Used by the Soviets in the Olympics to increase speed and endurance
    • Rhodiola produced such positive effects on stamina, energy and reducing stress than the Soviet Military classified the research as Top Secret during the Cold War
    • Secretly used by Soviet astronauts to increase stamina and performance while in space.
    • Named the best energy booster by Alternative Medicine (10/2004)

The story of the Rhodiola Rosea root reads like a Soviet Spy story. The Soviet Union during the 60′s conducts hundred’s of top secret studies on Rhodiola and uses it as a secret weapon for their military, athletes and cosmonauts. A young Soviet Soldier (Dr. Ramazanov) uses Rhodiola on the battle field to help his troops during the Afghan war. Later the Soviet Doctor who discovered Rhodiola comes to the US and starts to translate previously classified studies on Rhodiola and discovers an amazing history of positive clinical studies on this amazing root.

In time Rhodiola becomes well known by herbalist and doctors in the US and further research confirms its ability to increase energy, endurance and stamina, while reducing stress. Dr. Ramazanov works for years translating studies on Rhodiola and further refining the best ways to process the plant. Unfortunately, the Soviet Doctor, at the high of his career, dies tragically.

We know this sounds more like a spy movie then the story of an herbal supplement, but grab a cup of coffee and let us take you through the astounding world of Rhodiola Rosea…

Rhodiola Rosea – The Big Picture

November 24, 2008

Rhodiola Rosea – The Big Picture

In this article we will start at the top and describe exactly what Rhodiola is, where it comes from and why people are so excited about Rhodiola. If you already know the basics about Rhodiola you may want to skip this article and move on to our next article – Rhodiola Rosea Secrets Revealed

What is Rhodiola Rosea?

Rhodiola Rosea is a plant that grows in frigid temperatures and high rocky altitudes. Rhodiola Rosea can be found growing above 10,000 feet in the Altai mountains of Siberia. The plant can grow from 12-30 inches and has yellow flowers and is often called the Golden Root, Siberian Root, Roseroot or Arctic Root.

While Rhodiola Rosea has a striking yellow flower, it is the root of the Rhodiola Rosea that is prized for its health benefits. The root when cut gives off the aroma of a rose – and this is why it is called Rhodiola ROSEA.

Rhodiola Rosea (R. Rosea) belongs to the Crassulaceae plant family. It is important to note that there are over 200 species of the Rhodiola plant, but only the Rhodiola Rosea species has been shown to have significant health benefits.

What is the history of use of Rhodiola Rosea?

In the interest of keeping you awake, we will keep our history lesson short…

Rhodiola Rosea use as a medicinal plant can be traced back to 77 A.D. – when Greek Physician Dioscorides documented Rhodiola Rosea (called rodia riza back then) in his medical text – De Materia Medica. The Vikings used Rhodiola Rosea to increase endurance and stamina during their journeys. The Chinese Emperors would commission expeditions to remote parts of the Siberian Mountains to bring back the prized Golden Root – rhodiola rosea. In 1725 the herb was given its current name – Rhodiola Rosea by Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus.

From 77 A.D. to the mid 1900′s Rhodiola Rosea was prized as a medicinal herb throughout almost all parts of Europe and Asia. Rhodiola Rosea grew primarily in Siberia and it was so valued that it was illegal to trade it outside of Russian borders. Russians used Rhodiola Rosea to survive the harsh Siberian winters.

While there was tremendous anecdotal evidence, there was limited research on how Rhodiola Rosea worked. That all changed when the Soviet Union began extensive and top secret research into herbs after World War II.

War, Adaptogens, Rhodiola and the Soviets? What is the connection?

Yes, this looks like a question from Jeopardy. Let us explain…

After World War II the Soviets launched a country wide program to make Russians more competitive in the military, athletics and sciences. One aspect of this program was the investigation of herbal remedies that claimed to increase mental capacity, energy, endurance and stamina. In 1947 a Soviet Scientist named Dr. Lazarev coined the term Adaptogen.

Adaptogen herbs must conform to these 3 standards:

    • Must be nontoxic and cause very few, if any, side effects
    • Produce nonspecific resistance in the body to all types of stressors (physical, chemical and biological)
    • Produce a normalizing influence on the body.

What do those three standards really mean? An adaptogen herb will be nontoxic and cause few if any side effects. An adaptogen herb must help build resistance to all areas of stress that may effect our body. For example, if an herb helped with physical exhaustion, but did nothing to protect against viruses (biological stressor) it would NOT BE AN ADAPTOGEN. Finally, an adaptogen herb will be able to normalize the body and place the body in proper balance. The key with an adaptogen is being able to adapt to what the body needs and balancing the body. A herb that could increase energy if your body is fatigued and also decrease energy if your body is over stimulated, would be an example of an adaptogen herb.

Do adaptogens herbs really exist?

We understand that from a Western medical perspective adaptogens sound too good to be true. An herb that adapts and helps our body with whatever it needs, and does no harm… how could this be? Western medicine is based on using one drug to treat one specific problem, and then use another drug for another problem. Adaptogen herbs take a completely different approach and treat any problems we have as all connected to a balance issue in our body. Return balance to the body and you correct all the problems.

How did the Soviets identify adaptogens?

Simply by dropping rats into a bucket of water! Okay, there was a little more to it than that..

Dr. Lazarev, Dr. Brekhman and a team of more than 1,200 Soviet scientist, biologist and physicians began examining all the herbs for possible adaptogen effects. One of the most useful tests to see if an herb can help an animal adapt to stress is called the Swim Test.

A rat when placed in water will swim for 10-15 minutes and then only move in small amounts to stay a float. The Soviet team gave rats possible adaptogen herbs and tested to see if they would swim longer. Herbs that could increase the swim time were then subject to rigorous tests to see if they could help the body adapt to all types of stresses. How did Rhodiola Rosea do on the swim test? Rhodiola Rosea increased the rats swim time by 35-59%!

In total the Russian team investigated over 4,000 plants and conducted more than 1,000 clinical studies and experiments on adaptogens. Remember, the stated goal of the Soviets at the time was to find ways to increase the performance of Russian athletes, military, political officers and scientists. This research was considered of vital importance to the strength of the Soviet Union. Finally in 1968 Dr Brekhman published the results of all their studies – only 4 herbs were considered true adaptogens. Of course, Rhodiola Rosea was one of them –

How do we now know about all this top secret Russian research on Rhodiola?

We have two events to thank for our knowledge on Rhodiola Rosea – the fall of the Soviet Union and the actions of a Soviet Soldier named Dr. Zakir Ramazanov in the Afghanistan War.

To learn about how Rhodiola Rosea made it to the USA, please read our next article – Rhodiola Rosea Secrets Revealed

Recap:

Rhodiola Rosea is a plant that grows in cold, high altitude climates like Siberia. The Rhodiola Rosea root has been prized for medicinal purposes since 77 A.D. After World War II Russia started a country wide scientific program to find ways to increase the performance of its military, athletes, performers, politicians and scientists. Rhodiola Rosea was identified as an adaptogen – something that is not harmful, can balance the body and help reduce all stresses that the body may face.

For years the Soviet research on Rhodiola was classified. To learn how the Soviet Rhodiola research was discovered in the US, let’s continue on to our next article…
